The World Institute of Martial Arts  ·  Joondalup

Not a rank.A responsibility.

The TWIMA Leadership Team is for members ready to take responsibility for guiding the skills and focus of our younger students. Places are limited each intake, and every applicant is reviewed on their own merits.

Junior applications close Wed 30 Sep 2026 September 2026 intake · Cohort 1

At TWIMA, leadership is not about rank or status, but instead is about service, responsibility and growth, providing the opportunity to deepen your own martial arts understanding and grow in our community.

Our values — the Seven Principles of Bushido

Yu Courage  ·  Rei Respect  ·  Gi Justice  ·  Jin Compassion  ·  Makoto Honesty  ·  Meiyo Honour  ·  Chugi Loyalty

Leadership is where these stop being words on a wall and become something you are responsible for showing other people.

Who can apply

Aged 11 and over, blue belt or above — or your instructor puts your name forward.

Rank is the doorway, not the decision. Selection comes down to demonstrated character, commitment and readiness — not belt level or age alone.

Instructor's pick — if you are under blue belt and an instructor has nominated you, you are eligible. Put their name on your application.

Aged 11+
Junior Leadership sits alongside Young Leaders. No upper age limit.
Wednesdays, 5–6pm

One class a week
Supported on the mat, in a class at least one level below your own. We work out which class together at induction.
Events, when you can
Gradings, birthday parties, holiday programs, community events.

Two steps in

Step one takes a minute and commits you to nothing. Step two is the real application, and it should take some thought.

Step 1

Register your interest

About 60 seconds · no commitment

Tell us you want to be considered. We send you the full application, the class times, and an answer to whatever you want to ask first.

  • Name, age, current rank
  • Parent or guardian contact if under 18
  • Anything you want to ask us

Step 2

Full application

About 15 minutes · closes Wed 30 Sep 2026

Your case for the spot. There is no right answer — we are reading for you. Be specific and be honest.

  • Why you want this, and what leadership means to you
  • What you have already shown that says you are ready
  • The classes and events you can commit to
  • Parent or guardian sign-off if under 18

How selection works

01 · Written application

Read by an instructor who knows you and your training.

02 · Instructor review

Character, commitment and readiness — assessed against the class support the floor actually needs.

03 · Trial class

You take part of a class under supervision. This is the part that decides it.

04 · Decision

Accepted, waitlisted, or not this intake. Everyone gets an answer and a reason.

Full application

Section 2 is the part that matters. Write it in your own words — we read for honesty and specificity, not polish, and a parent-written answer is obvious from ten paces. Closes Wednesday 30 September 2026.

Section 1 — Applicant details

Under blue belt? A nomination is what makes you eligible — name the instructor here.

Section 2 — Why you deserve this spot
Section 3 — Commitment

You will need one class a week where you are at least one level above the students you support — we work out which class together at induction.

Which TWIMA events are you interested in supporting?

Section 4 — Declaration

Before you ask

Is this an automatic upgrade?

No. Places are limited every intake and every applicant is reviewed on their own merits. Applying is not being accepted.

My child is under blue belt.

Then they need an instructor's nomination. Ask any instructor — if they see it, they will put the name forward.

What if we miss a week?

Tell us. Shift work and FIFO rosters are normal here — what we need is the conversation, not perfect attendance.

Is leadership the same as being an instructor?

No. Leadership is service, responsibility and growth. It is the pathway an instructor comes from, not the job itself.

Can adults apply?

The Friday adult and staff session is by invitation this intake. If you want to be considered, speak to Graham directly.
